Happy Acres Art

"Something to lean on and help you find your way."

The hand carved hiking sticks of Mike Vickery are a continuation of a journey begun over 50 years ago. Mike discovered the beginnings of his artistic talent in the fourth grade, after attending Happy Acres Elementary School. A self taught carver, beginning in the 10th grade, with 3 1/2 years of formal training in graphic design and illustration  at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Mike has been a freelance illustrator for publications such as National Geographic Traveler and a frequent contributor of ascerbic cartoons to many corporate publications and regional magazines. His love of nature and the woods has consumed him for nearly his entire life. Married to his best friend Teri, also an avid backpacker and woods woman, they decided to leave the "suburbs" and live in the woods, instead of visiting them every chance they had.

The home of Happy Acres Art is in a secluded hollow in Looneyville, West, by God, Virginia on 125 acres of hills, valleys, springs and their beloved woods. Walks in the woods yield the art displayed on these pages. Each stick is hand carved with knives (so far he's cut only one artery but he still has all his fingers!) usually from 10 year old maples. The head of the stick was once the root of the tree. The carvings represent native West Virginia critters found in his woods or the ones found in his fertile imagination.

To many people, woods are a place a person can get lost...to Mike, the woods helped him find peace and natural beauty and his way in the world.

Mike's sticks are also available at:
